Following the success of the hands-on workshop organised by the SUMAT consortium at the 5th Media for All conference in September 2013 in Dubrovnik, a series of seminars on post-editing machine translated subtitles have been arranged in various universities across Europe.
Seminars have already been carried out in Antwerp University, Belgium, in February and Roehampton University, United Kingdom, in March.
Four more are planned in the following locations across Europe in 2014:
- Zurich University, Switzerland, April,
- University City London (UCL), United Kingdom, May
- University of Vienna, Austria, May
- Salento University, Lecce, Italy – Date TBC, but scheduled for the Summer months
- The Basque Country University, Bilbao, Spain – Date TBC but scheduled for Autumn
Arantza del Pozo, Head of Human Speech and Language Technology Group at SUMAT consortium partner, Vicomtech, commented:
“As the project has progressed and the subtitling community has learnt more about the SUMAT approach, a number of universities contacted the consortium interested in learning more about the subtitle post-editing process. Scholars in charge of training professional subtitlers have realized that subtitle post-editing is a significant trend in the field of audiovisual translation and are willing to start including it in their academic curricula in the near future.”
